Extension of Work Permit
If you are already in Canada on work permit, you can apply for extension of your work permit. If your job is extended or changes, you must apply to extend or change the conditions of your existing work permit before it expires. But make sure that you apply for extension of your work permit 30 day before the expiry of work permit. If you are in Canada and need to extend both work permit and renew your Temporary Resident Visa, you may apply for renewal of TRV once extension of your work permit is approved by IRCC.
You may get an extension if:
- you apply for your new work permit before your current work permit expires
- you and your employer sign a new employer-employee contract, if applicable, and either
- your employer gets a new Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada that says the employer is allowed to hire you, if your job requires an LMIA, or
- your employer pays the employer compliance fee and submits a new offer of employment through the Employer Portal if your job does not require an LMIA
However, if you are offered a different job in Canada, you must apply for new work permit.
Who can apply?
This application is for you if you:
- want to extend your work permit
- need to make changes to the conditions on your work permit, such as:
- the type of work you can do
- the employer you can work for
- where you can work
If you do not have a work permit but want to work in Canada temporarily.
Employer-specific work permits
You need to apply to extend or change the conditions of your work permit if:
- your job is extended
- there are changes to your current job, such as:
- a change in your pay
- new responsibilities
- you’re offered a different job
- you want to work for a new employer
You can’t start working at a different job or for a new employer until you get your work permit with the new conditions.
Open work permits
If you have an open work permit, you may be able to extend it as long as you’re still eligible to work in Canada with an open work permit.
